Inspection of Auxiliary Engine Crankcase




• If the Generator has been running, allow it to cool down before
opening the crank case doors.

• Check the visual condition of crank case walls and the crankshaft and lube Oil. If the crank case and the oil is black, it means that there is blow past of some units.

• Pump out the crank case oil in a drum or whatever arrangements
are provided.

• Test the oil with the lube oil testing kit provided on board.

• Look for any signs of jacket cooling water leakage in crank case. In doubt, pressure test the system by connecting a hydraulic pump
to the inlet of the cooling water and keeping the outlet from the
engine shut.

• Look for any signs of wiped bearings.

• Check the tightness of Main bearing bolts, Crank pin bearing bolts and ensure that all the lube oil connection pipes in the crank case are tight.

• Check that the crank pin bearing is floating on the pin.i.e. you should be able to move the crank pin bearing side ways with the help of a crow bar.

• Check and clean the lube oil suction filter if provided inside the crank case.

• Start Lub. oil pump or pump oil with the help of the hand pump. Turn the engine slowly. Check in each unit, that the oil is freely flowing out of from crank pin bearing, main bearing, and Gudgeon pin bushes both sides.

• Check and clean Cyclone oil filter if provided.

• Renew crank case oil if required. In case the oil is being renewed
due to contamination, first take little oil in the sump, open the drain provided on oil cooler, and flush out the old oil remaining in the pipe line and the cooler. Close the drain and take oil in the sump.

• Check the crank case door jointing. Renew if damaged.

Oils containing water can only be de-watered in a perfect manner if the bowl is accurately adjusted to the difference in densities of oil and water. The gravity disc with proper inner diameter i.e. with the diameter that corresponds to the difference in densities of the oil-water mixture to be treated should, therefore, be inserted in the bowl, This disc can be chosen from the set of disc provided with the separator. The inner diameter of the disc to be chosen can be determined by:  Calculation   Experiment The general rule is : Small diameter gravity disc when treating heavy oil Large diameter regulating ring when treating light oil Determining the size of gravity disc by calculation: For a given separating temperature, the inner diameter of the gravity disc and if the desired density of the oil can be determined from the diagram, provided that the density of the oil at a temperature ranging 15℃ and 90℃ is known.
